Unusual Hardware

At James & James, we believe your furniture should be sturdy and easy to set up or take down. Toward this goal, we use some unusual types of hardware in our pieces - wing nuts so you don't need a wrench, split hinges to secure angled joints, and others. Below you will see examples of the types of hardware we use, and explanations of their advantages over more common choices.

Wing Nuts, Lock Washers. and Carriage Bolts, Oh My!

This trio holds most of the joints together on our furniture. Sturdy, secure, and easily removed to break down your furniture when you need to move, or simply get it out of the way temporarily, they are the workhorses of our hardware supply. You can disconnect them, and reconnect them without tools, yet they stay put during play time!

Nuts with Wings

Wingnuts can be tightened or loosened by hand without tools. That just seems so much easier than having to find the correct size of wrench when you need to assemble or break down your furniture. Wing Nuts stay put, yet come right off when you need to stash that St. Andrew's Cross under the bed before your mother-in-law comes for a visit.

Lock it with a Washer

A Lock Washer does wonders for keeping nuts from coming loose. It's sort of a washer, and sort of a spring that puts tension on the nut and bolt so they don't work their way loose as you flog that sub.

A Bolt Head Smooth as a Baby's Bottom

As the name implies, Carriage Bolts were created in the days of horse drawn carriages to provide a secure fastener that didn't break the elegant lines of a beautiful carriage. The dome shaped head keeps the bolt in place without leaving a sharp edge to scrape or snag

Split Hinges

When parts meet at odd angles, you need something special to hold the joint together. A Split Hinge, with one half of the hinge secured to each part, works wonders!

Split Hinges

Joints that need to come apart and reassemble require sturdy and easily separated hardware. Split hinges do a great job! Also, the placement of the two different halves of the hinge make it nearly impossible to assemble your furniture incorrectly.

Split Hinges Unhinged

We replace the pin in hinges with a removable steel Lynch Pin. Pull the ring, and the Lynch Pin slides right out, allowing you to separate the pieces quickly and easily! Realign the halves of the hinge, and the Lynch Pin slides right back in, creating a secure joint.
